Hi Everyone,

I have set a path \\server\share\desktop to redirect DESKTOP and \\server\share\StartMenu to redirect STARTMENU in Group Policy which is applied to an OU where citrix server is nested to Authenticated users.

1. I have set GP to "Remove Common Program Groups From Start Menu" which of course remove items in "All User" profile and leaves items from the user profile. (unfortunatley ALL useful apps are missing now likes of Office etc)

2. I need to know how i could acomplish this folder redirections. i want to give access to users for published desktop i.e Ms Office, and few other programs, how do i do this?

3. I also want to know how to give access to users to certain applications in Start Menu.

In a nutshell i want users to see what i want them to see on the Desktop and on the Start Menu using GP!

Currently, they can only see basic stuff accessories and other microsoft standard etc...

Please can someone help me in a layman term as i have limited understanding of citrix and GP.

Thankyou very much!

Zaf

Zaf, last year I wrote a pretty detailed article on how to configure Folder Redirection. You can find it here:

Hi Patrick,

Thanks for that article, (its great) i know the permission side of settings, but what i need to know is how i can create the Start Menu and Desktop locked down.

Basically, how do i put word, excel, application on the desktop? and then how do i put MS office and my documents in start menu?

Do i create shortcuts or is there another way of putting apps in these folder??

Thanks

What you can do is redirect everyone, or groups of users to shares that users do not Write or Modify NTFS Permissions. Then you can populate these folders with whatever shortcuts or files that you want, and they will immediately show up for the target population.

Ok i followed your article, and have created folders as above my intial post.

i like to point everyone to \\general\desktop locked down. Please provide an example as to how i would place a word application?

secondly, \\general\sartmenu\ locked down. please provide an example how i would place the whole of MS office folder with all the microsoft applications inside?

Apology, for detailed explanation, i did say i am new to policy.

I thank you for your quick response.

Thanks

Redirecting the Start Menu and Desktop to a file share is a bad idea on many many levels. If you need granular control of the Applications in the Start Menu and Desktop then I would suggest using PNAgent (yes, provided that you are running Citrix but hey, that the value it adds) or other PNAgent link utility to manage the end-users shortcuts.

The only thing you should really redirect is the User's My Documents folder. Some people like to redirect Application Data but even that can causes more issues than not.

Hello agai,

im hoping someone can help me here...

i have created 2 shares 1 as "general" for domain users and 1 as "IT" for domain admins.

i got the general folder redirection working, but IT share is not working, it is also seeing the desktop of general for some reason?

General Share permissions:-

Everyone = Full
Administrators = Full
System = Full

NTFS Permissions:-

Adminstarors = Full
System = Full
Creator Owner = Full
Everyone = read/excute

......................................................................................

IT Share Permissions:-

Same as General

NTFS Permsissons:-

Same as General

Please can someone help me to sort this out. I want domain users to see diffrent desktop to IT. Currently Domain admin also see general desktops.

I HAVE CORRECTLY SET THE PATH FOR BOTH DESKTOPS IN GP.

Thanks
